IIRC, in Lars von Trier’s The Idiots (Dogme 2), they use “spaz” to describe themselves when they get “into character,” which is to say, when they start acting like mentally disabled people.
Is it a Danish word or was I just confused by the subtitles? (I probably used the French subtitles, though.)
Southeastern Pennsylvania listeners will recognize “Spaz” as the name of a beverage distributor in West Chester; I’ve driven past their facility, which has the word “SPAZ” in very large letters on an exterior wall.
The owner of Spaz is Bob Spaziani, and there’s your etymology, at least in this case.
Hi Dave, Howard S. and Howard C.
Thanks so much for all the work that you’ve done, and continue to do for your Word Nerd fans, it’s very much appreciated!
I understand the need to scale back the production of your show, and I’ll still be watching eagerly for each new episode, as you find time to podcast!
I can certainly understand the decision…and best wishes…
I can’t imagine how you put together shows every week for so long…and I hope you find the time and space that this move is intended to give you.
Herr Shepherd!
You make me laugh really hard.
I finally got around to listning to you on the podcasts.
I just recently finished listning to the one about ‘mofo’.
Which. I must say.
Made me smile.
I didn’t know that it stemmed all the way from Oedipus Rex.
It was pretty cool, actually.
Congrats on the new Pod– err… Nerdcast! It was great to hear about the “every other week” thing, which may be better for some people. As you can see, I just listened to this for the first time, 7 days after it was out, so not having a new one every Saturday might just work out after all.
And, it sucks about the Cease and Desist Letters… how can they just do that? That’s just not right.
And, I wanted to let you know, in case you didn’t, that “SPAZ” is a type of Shotgun with a random ‘burst’ where the shots travel in random directions and not just go straight out of the barrel. That kind of goes with the ‘spaz-out’ definition you gave for spaz.
As always, keep up the good work! I look forward to hearing about Sports Dereritives (spell check?)
