Summer Vacation Edition (74)

Dave Shepherd announces a summer vacation for and from The Word Nerds. The show will return with new editions on September 9.

(This is take 2 of this program. Take 1 was done using Übercaster, but Dave hasn’t yet learned all the ins and outs of that new Macintosh podcasting software. You’re not imagining things: there is more program in the right side of your headphones than in the left. Sorry!) (1:55)

In order to get a bit of summer in before the start of school, Dave will take five weeks off from producing and uploading new shows. (2:28)

    Hi Dave,
I just wanted to wish you, Barbara and the 2 Howards a wonderful and relaxing summer.

Although I’m going to miss the shows - I’ve been listening for over a year now, and your banter never fails to pick me up after a long day teaching EFL - you guys totally deserve the rest.

So, thanks for the first 74 shows, have a great summer, and I’ll be looking forward to the new shows in September.
    David B.

Hey guys, enjoy your break… just curious Dave, will you be posting any best-of episodes? I suppose I could go back and download a few myself, it’s just that I’m spectacularly lazy and I seem to have gotten addicted to my Ipod synching itself. In fact the whole synching thing still seems kind of like magic to me. Lazy magic. ;-)
Anyway, looking forward to September, cheers,
    -Evan in NY

Evan: “just curious Dave, will you be posting any best-of episodes?”

Nope, sorry. I’m taking a real break.

Actually the one “best-of” episode that I assembled during the Christmas holiday break was a TON more work to do than a normal show, even taking in to account all the research and preparation. I had to listen to dozens of old shows and then cut them and then assemble them, process them to make them sound the same, etc., etc. It took me about four times as long as a regular weekly program.

So, dear audience, I hereby invite you to do the assembly yourself, and find your own favorite old shows. Look either here or at http://thewordnerds.libsyn.com.

Enjoy your vacation! A strong work ethic is a good thing, but don’t let yourself go overboard :) A good break every now and then keeps things fresh for everyone and I’m pretty sure all of us understand that it’ll only make your work better when you come back. Don’t feel guilty at all. The best shows come from people who are enjoying creating them, not people who end up feeling obliged to. Keep yourself in the first category.

Besides, it’ll give me a chance to catch up on some TV I’ve TiVo’d and let sit while listening to all these podcasts I try to keep up with! Is this not cool that we can get so many good shows to enjoy and think about from the internet, now? TV has definitely moved to second place for me. Even with cable. Although I guess the fact that some of my podcasts are from PBS may make the balance a little off.

I love the show and would love to donate if I still had a working PayPal account. Is there any other way I could donate?

Thank you for taking a break! I just discovered this podcast a few weeks ago and I’m trying to listen to all of the archived episodes. I don’t want to have to feel like I missed out on any of this fantastic show. It’s been nice to be able to catch up without worrying about keeping up as well. The show is great, but it will be nice to have 1 show to look forward to each week rather than having the 36 episodes I still want to finish before school starts again staring at me from my iPod.

Thank you for doing this show. It gives me good things to think about and has really helped me keep my mind sharp while I’m away from school for the summer. Keep up the good work! :)
I hope you enjoy your well deserved break and I will be looking forward to your next new episode (as soon as I finish these 36 episodes…)
